2013-2014 Through the Eyes of Others
Education might be summarized as the process of seeking knowledge of the world and your place in it. As the inscription above the Delphic Oracle reads: "Know Thyself". However, such knowledge is incredibly difficult to achieve, largely because of the natural assumption that our own cultural practices, beliefs, experiences, and worldview are the norm. It is only in encountering the Other person’s, culture, religion, political viewpoint, and historical understanding that we can dislodge the default view and be opened to a broader understanding. Most ironically, and most importantly, moving away from the default view allows us to stand outside ourselves and look critically upon our own culture and worldview.
