SPS (Society of Physics Students)
SPS (Society of Physics Students) has a new chapter on campus. Dr. Scott Hawley is the faculty advisor.

Pi (Π) Day was celebrated by the Society of Physics Students (SPS) club with a fundraiser "Pi (Π) A Professor". In the Photo Dr. Scott Hawley is surrounded by Physics students.
Society of Physics Students (SPS) attend conference in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Scott Hawley and Dr. Stephen Robinson, along with students from Belmont's Society of Physics Students (SPS), attended the annual joint meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) held in Washington, D.C. February 13-17, 2010.
The majority of the presentations given at the conference were based in astrophysics and particle physics. The Belmont students and faculty attended talks on topics such as black holes and secrecy in physics research, and also several undergraduate research presentations on topics such as finding new materials for super-capacitor applications, fabricating new superconducting materials at low temperatures, and studying quantum spin of gold atoms. The group also enjoyed talks from the AAPT about physics demonstrations in the classroom and effective teaching methods.
The following students (shown in the photo L to R) went on the trip: Stewart Brenegar (Physics major/Mathematics minor), Phil Feurtado (Physics/Audio Engineering double major), Daniel Baugh (Mathematics major/Computer Science minor), Chris Olfers (Physics major/Mathematics minor), Lindsey Thompson (Music Cognition major/ Physics minor)

This student organization's purpose is to promote research in the area of biochemistry and molecular biology through seminars and laboratory opportunities, while providing a social setting for networking and volunteering. Dr. Rachel Rigsby serves as the faculty advisor for this organization.
SAACS (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society)
SAACS (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society) has an active chapter on campus and was selected to receive a Commendable Award for its activities conducted during the 2007-08 academic year! Lists of award winning chapters were published in Chemical & Engineering News and in in Chemistry. These chapters were honored at the 237th ACS National Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT in March 2009. Dr. Alison Moore and Dr. Rachel Rigsby are the faculty advisors. Students involved in SAACS have participated in the following activities:
- attended regional and national ACS (American Chemical Society) meetings
- visited local high schools to present Chemistry demonstrations
- offered convocation programs on campus as part of National Chemistry Week
- participated in Explorations in Chemistry --- High School Chemistry Day at Belmont
- participated in CSI Week at Belmont and CSI: Belmont......Whodunnit?
The Belmont chapter of SAACS has entered a video in the ACS Presidential Video Challenge. The videos are to reach out to elementary and middle school students and help them develop an awareness of who chemists are and to understand how important chemistry is to their lives. Awards will be announced at the end of 2008. Here is the link to Belmont's SAACS video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKr__4TXV9g
