Data science is emerging as a field that is revolutionizing science and industries alike. Work across nearly all domains is becoming more data-driven, affecting both the jobs that are available and the skills that are required. As more data and ways of analyzing them become available, more aspects of the economy, society, and daily life will become dependent on data. (Data Science for Undergraduates: Opportunities and Options, National Academies Press 2017)

According to a recent Glassdoor study, Data Scientist tops the 2019 list of entry-level jobs that command the highest salaries, boasting a median base salary of $95,000. It has also reigned as the "Best Job in America" for four years in a row. Forbes has said that there will be a 28% increase in demand for data scientists by the year 2020. Belmont’s Data Science program has taken this demand into consideration, and it has been developed through ongoing discussions with top data scientists from:

Hospital Corporation of America (HCA)
Digital Reasoning
Perception Health

Built Technologies
Axial Healthcare
Watershed LRS
Nashville Biosciences
Think Tennessee

In addition, over a dozen Belmont faculty from the College of Sciences and Mathematics have offered their guidance and expertise along with Belmont faculty and deans from Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Business and Social Sciences. This means that opportunities for internships and jobs across multiple industries are abundant.

Students in the program will continue to engage these communities through internships, a data scientist in residence program, data projects and industry office hours from the beginning of their studies to successful careers and/or graduate school. These opportunities are built upon a strong curriculum along with the networks that are provided during their time at Belmont to learn the skills needed to properly analyze data.

Nashville: A Rising City with a Need for Data Scientists

Along with the growing field of data science, the need for talent has arisen in its wake. Nashville is hailed as one of “top 20 cities for tech jobs” (Money), the “second largest growing tech market” (Fortune) and “a city that is creating the highest wages” (Forbes).

Belmont provides numerous exciting opportunities for internships (most often paid) and jobs for data scientists. Nashville is also home to over 40,000 businesses including corporate headquarters for Bridgestone, Nissan, Mars Petcare, HCA and the recently announced Amazon Operations Center of Excellence which alone will create 5,000 high-paying jobs.
