Richard Sowienski


Richard Sowienski serves as Associate Professor and Program Director of Publishing, Belmont University’s first-in-the-nation undergraduate major devoted to magazine and book publishing. He has over 30 years of publishing experience, including Managing Editor of the literary magazine, The Missouri Review, Parenting and Education Editor for Better Homes and Gardens, a founding editor for the country music and lifestyle magazine Country America, and Advertising and Promotion Manager for Successful Farming magazine. Recently he served as Writer-in-Residence for Journey Group, a magazine custom publisher in Charlottesville, VA.

He has written or directed projects garnering over 80 regional and national advertising and marketing awards, secured numerous NEA and arts grants that helped fund The Missouri Review magazine’s print redesign and the addition of both digital print and audio. Sowienski received his MFA degree from the University of Iowa in the Nonfiction Writing Program.

His current research interests include the branding of nonprofit organizations through content management systems and traditional magazines.
