Message from the Chair
Thom Storey is the chair of the Department of Media Studies. He
has been at Belmont University since 1985. Thom hails from western
New York and holds a B.A. in Journalism from St. Bonaventure
University and an M.S. in Journalism and Mass Communication from
Iowa State University. He also participated in the Media Management
program at the prestigious Poynter Institute. He has more than 20
years of professional journalism experience in addition to teaching
and research.
At Belmont, students don't merely study the media, they
become practitioners in their respective fields. First-year
students are immersed in practical media courses in their first
semester, whether it be reporting, video production or public
relations. Students can hone their skills working on the staff of
our campus media, all housed in this department. Many of our
students are equipped to undertake professional internships after
their second year. The majority complete at least two internships
prior to graduation. This enables our graduates to build personal
portfolios that give them an edge in the job market upon
graduation.
