Major in Commercial Music

  
Emphasis Options

The major in Commercial Music is performance-based and requires 8 semesters of private applied study as well as a recital.


1.  Composition and Arranging EmphasisPrepares students to be composers and arrangers in a variety of commercial music styles.

This emphasis must be confirmed after submission and approval of required material—typically by mid-term of the second semester.  Students who enter above Freshman level (or any student desiring immediate confirmation) should submit material at the time of audition or as soon as possible.  Please contact Dr. Sharon Gregg, Director of Admissions School of Music for more details regarding submission of materials:

  • Two (2) songs in contrasting styles / tempos.
  • NOTE: For BOTH songs include:
    • Score or lead sheet
    • Lyric sheet (if lyrics not included on lead sheet)
    • CD recording


2.  Music  Business EmphasisProvides students exposure to various business aspects of the commercial music industry,  and students can elect to do a music business internship.


3.  Music Technology Emphasis  – Prepares students to create and/or recreate music using the latest technology available.


4.  Performance EmphasisPrepares students to be performers in a variety of commercial music styles.

This emphasis must be confirmed by the applied faculty in the performance area at the end of the fourth semester jury.


5.  Song Writing EmphasisPrepares students to create songs in a variety of commercial music styles.
