Jazz String Quartet
Belmont Jazz String Quartet, directed by Tracy Silverman
Belmont Jazz String Quartet plays pieces that combine the classical tradition with jazz and other popular styles, including selections from the recordings of the Turtle Island String Quartet. The group frequently performs publicly in Nashville at such places as Bongo Java and in various Belmont recitals.
The Jazz String Quartet provides opportunities for individual players to improvise within the framework of each piece, requiring strong listening skills and an unusually high degree of musicianship. The integration of each member into the ensemble is the ultimate goal. The focus is on the preparation of jazz string quartet arrangements and development of alternative string techniques unique to the jazz string quartet such as comping, basslines, "the chop" and other rhythmic devices and styles.
Rehearsals are scheduled by the director. This course offers one hour of ensemble credit.
