Vocal Pedagogy



"Welcome to the Vocal Pedagogy degree at Belmont University. I am excited that you have an interest in teaching singing. Our goal at Belmont is to give you the tools to teach singing in a healthy way. One of the ways we accomplish this goal is to partner with the Vanderbilt Voice Center, an internationally known center for vocal rehabilitation, to educate you fully in anatomy and the physiology of our vocal instrument.

Teaching singing includes healthy technique, strategies for vocal growth, creation of your own studio, and so much more. If you are looking for a place of excellence where you will be challenged to become the best teacher you can be, then come to Belmont!

Vocal ArtsGraduate Vocal Pedagogy Major 

The Vocal Pedagogy major is a 33-hour degree program. In addition to a core of music classes, offerings in the voice pedagogy specialization include two levels of pedagogy --  applied lessons, opera and art song literature --as well as various ensemble opportunities. The culminating project for the degree may be either a lecture recital or thesis. Abundant performance opportunities are available on the Belmont University campus as well as in the Nashville community.




Curriculum
Central to the curriculum are the two pedagogy classes that combine elements of vocal acoustics, anatomy and physiology. In these classes, students proceed through a systematic approach to the coordination of the respiratory, vibratory, resonatory and articulatory mechanisms for the freely functioning voice. Numerous class meetings are held at the Vanderbilt Voice Center, where many people help students examine the production of beautiful sound in light of technical skills with optimum physical function. In the advanced class, students have the opportunity to observe fibro-optic and stroboscopic exams.

Active teaching is incorporated into Advanced Pedagogy and Supervised teaching courses. Students learn to select vocal literature appropriate to age, type and maturity of the singer. In studying comparative pedagogy, students observe various voice studios in Nashville and become acquainted with the texts of several different twentieth and twenty-first century pedagogues. Graduate pedagogy students often teach applied voice lessons through the Belmont Academy - a preparatory and continuing education program for the Nashville community.


vocal ArtsVocal Arts Lab

An integral part of the voice pedagogy program, the Belmont Vocal Arts Lab offers students state-of-the-art facilities providing acoustic information that can be used extensively in the practical aspects of voice analysis and research. The 'mission control' of the Vocal Arts Lab is the main computer unit, which generates a spectrogram in real-time to provide a visual readout of the voice showing pitch, vibrato rate, singer's format, legato, vowel, and certain aspects of timbre. The Vocal Arts Lab serves as a support to the study of vocal pedagogy at Belmont, both on the undergraduate and graduate level, and seeks to promote not only excellent singing but vocal health.
