Masterclasses, Ensembles, and Video Upload

Masterclasses

Every participant in the Belmont Summer Vocal Arts Intensive will participate in a genre-specific masterclass. The masterclass will be made up of 12 students who will each sing a prepared solo for the instructor and receive feedback. The masterclass functions as a public voice lesson, where both the individual singer and the other members of class can benefit from the feedback. Each student should prepare two solos, preferably memorized, for the masterclass.

Ensembles

Each participant of the Belmont Summer Vocal Arts Intensive will be assigned to a small ensemble. We will assign participants based on student preference, video audition, and ensemble needs. We will have the following ensemble genres available this year:

    • Chamber Singers - this ensemble will perform music from the traditional choral repertoire as appropriate for small ensembles. This is a more classically geared ensemble that will use tuning forks rather than piano for rehearsal. Repertoire will be unaccompanied.
    • Gospel/R&B - this ensemble will perform selections by popular Gospel and R&B artists. Repertoire will be accompanied.
    • Musical Theatre - this ensemble will perform selections from classical and contemporary musicals. Some choreography may be implemented, and the repertoire will be accompanied.
    • Pop A Cappella - this ensemble will perform selections by current contemporary artists using only voices. Beatboxers welcome!
    • Pop / Rock / Country - this ensemble performs selections by current contemporary artists in the genres of pop, rock, or country music. Repertoire will be accompanied.
    • Vocal Jazz - this ensemble will perform selections from the American Songbook or jazz arrangements of contemporary songs. Singers may also experiment with vocal improvisation, or scat singing. Selections may be accompanied or unaccompanied.

    Primary Audition Video

    • Your one-minute video should be in the genre of your desired Masterclass category: Classical, Commercial, or Musical Theatre.
    • If you are choosing the Integrated Masterclass, you may submit either a classical or commercial video.
    • The video may be of a previously recorded performance, or a video created for the purpose of this audition.
    • The video length should be limited to one minute - please choose the best minute of your singing to demonstrate your strengths. Feel free to cut accompaniment introductions for this purpose.
    • Upload your video to an online platform.
      • You will be asked to provide a link to your video in the application. We are providing instructions for completing this through YouTube, though you may use any platform you wish as long as the link allows our faculty to review the video.

    Secondary Video Audition

Audition Videos will also be used for Small Ensemble placement this year.

    • Classical Videos may be used for placement in Chamber Choir.
    • Commercial Videos may be used for placement in Pop A Cappella, Vocal Jazz, Gospel/R&B, and Pop/Rock/Country.
    • Musical Theatre Videos may be used for placement in the Musical Theatre Ensemble.

If your Primary Audition Video does not meet the needs of the Ensemble placement, you may submit a second 1:00 video to be used for Ensemble placement. Please do not submit two videos of the same style.
