Belmont Physical Therapy students developed and implemented a Sports Festival for children with disabilities recently. Students worked with Michelle Hill of Empower Me Day Camp to put on an afternoon of fun games and sporting activities for school-age children. Empower Me Day Camp provides summer day camps for children with disabilities, as well as, social and recreational activities throughout the school year. The Physical Therapy students planned several fun activities that each had a specific therapeutic purpose. Sherry Tegarden Flecksteiner (’99) and Belmont DPT alum (’02) stands among the greatest softball players in Belmont history. Both a distinguished hitter and pitcher, Tegarden Flecksteiner virtually rewrote the Bruin record book. She ranks first in career runs scored (128) and NCAA Division-I era pitching victories (11), and she ranks second in career hits (166), triples (15) and stolen bases (49). Also the standard bearer for a myriad of single-season records, Tegarden Flecksteiner ranks in the Top 4 all-time at Belmont in a staggering 13 categories. But perhaps most noteworthy, this versatile performer was the steadying force in transitioning the Bruin program from NAIA to NCAA Division-I play.  She was formally inducted as part of a banquet on Fri., Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Maddox Grand Atrium of the Curb Event Center.

Voight Presents at Two Major Conferences

Dr. Mike Voight, professor of physical therapy, offered the keynot lecture this summer for the International Federation for Sports Physiotherapy Symposium (IFSP) in Zurich, Switzerland. He presented on analyzing biomechanical performance in golf and developing a fitness program around the findings. He also presented on the anatomy and clinical examination of the hip as a part of a symposium on hip pathology at the National Athletic Training Association Annual Conference held in St. Louis. This is the largest meeting of the year for athletic trainers with more than 8,000 attending the conference. Once all invited programs were submitted, the conference committee selects the best program and gives it the designation of being the Johnson and Johnson Distinguished Keynote Lecture Symposium and does not schedule any other programming opposite this presentation. Voight's Hip Symposium was selected this year for that honor and more than 4,500 people were attendance at the lecture. Finally, he was also recently published in the North American Journal of Sports Physical Therapy for an article he co-wrote titled "The Chop and Lift Reconsidered: Integrating Neuromuscular Principles into Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation."

School of Physical Therapy Celebrates National Month with Charity Event

On Sun., Oct. 5, 90 students from Belmont’s School of Physical Therapy participated in the annual Dierks Bentley Celebrity Motorcycle Ride and Jam Session benefitting Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Belmont’s PT students, along with Professor Michael Voight, get involved each year with this event as a way to celebrate October as National Physical Therapy Month. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) intends its members to use October as an opportunity to educate communities about who physical therapists are and what they do. APTA designated the theme for this October as “Physical Therapy: It’s All About Movement.” Voight, fellow faculty, staff and Belmont’s PT students serve as volunteers at the annual Music and Miles Ride to increase awareness of physical therapy in Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

This year’s charity ride started in Williamson County and wound through downtown Music City, ending at Riverfront Park where gathered crowds were treated to performances by Bentley, Tim McGraw, Jeremy Camp and others. Belmont students were recognized throughout the day as the staff working behind the scenes to help make this event successful. The 2008 Music and Miles ride and concert raised more than $276,000.
