Annual Poetry Contest

Dollar General bvl

In 2010, Belmont began partnering with Metro Nashville Public Schools to sponsor a poetry contest in conjunction with Belmont's Annual Family Literacy Day.  First through fourth grade students are invited to submit original poems based on the current year's theme.

This year's theme for the 8th Annual Contest was once again "Favorite Animal" and children in first through fourth grades in Metro Public Schools were invited to compose a 12 to 16 line poem about their favorite animal from literature.  Five finalists were selected by the Belmont English Club.  The Top 5 poets worked with local professional songwriters Sherrié Austin, Aaron Goodvin, Bill McDermott, Will Rambeaux and Olivia Rudeen to set their poems to music.

Please take a few minutes to listen to each of the five songs and vote for your favorite at the bottom of the page.  Online voting will remain open until Friday evening, April 7.  Onsite voting at Belmont's 17th Annual Family Literacy Day will take place between 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017.  Votes from online and onsite voting will be counted and First through Fifth place awards will be  presented at 3:00 p.m.Belmont's 17th Annual Family Literacy Day .
