Harassment

Belmont University values the dignity and worth of every individual, recognizing that each person is unique with certain rights and responsibilities. The following statement is in compliance with federal and state regulations (Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975): Discriminatory - Belmont University is committed to providing an environment in which all persons are safe from harassment and intimidation based on their race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability.  Harassment can include, but is not limited to, physical conduct or verbal innuendo that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual because of his/her, race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability, or that of his/her relatives, friends or associates and that: (i) has the purpose or effect of creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment; (ii) has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's academic or job performance; or (iii) otherwise adversely affects an individual's educational or employment opportunities. Such harassment is contrary to the Christian standards of conduct expected of all members of the university community.

Harassing conduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • epithets, slurs, stereotyping or threatening, intimidating or hostile acts, that relate to race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability; and
  • written or graphic material that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual or group because of race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability and that is placed on walls, bulletin boards, or elsewhere on campus or circulated on campus.

Any person who engages in harassment will be subject to disciplinary action ranging from a warning to expulsion/discharge, if appropriate. Any student wishing to file a complaint regarding harassment should contact the Dean of Students Office or follow specific procedures as listed under "Complaints and Grievances" section.
