Study Abroad & Away Programs

An exclusive Belmont University experience away from Nashville, Belmont USA allows you to continue academic coursework for your undergraduate degree while gaining hands-on experience in a variety of cities across the United States and the world. Pair your Belmont academic courses while engaging in an internship or other immersion experience in Los Angeles, New York City, Hollywood, Washington D.C., Oregon or even the Bonnaroo Music Festival.

Belmont East pairs academic and experiential learning with an internship in the heart of New York City. You will complete general education and major specific courses while working at your internship and living in New York City for a semester. Courses are taught by Belmont University faculty and local industry professionals serving as adjunct faculty.

Belmont USA in Hollywood is a summer work opportunity where selected Motion Pictures or Movie and Television Writing students can apply classroom learning to specific career goals in the Motion Pictures industry.

Belmont USA in Hollywood also serves as an immersion experience within the motion pictures industry. Interns gain practical skills in state-of-the-art technical facilities and are exposed to the expertise of renowned producers, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers & agents.

The Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business student enrichment office serves the Curb College student body by providing organizations and activities that supplement each student's traditional classroom experience. By encouraging leadership development, professional connections and purposeful reflection, the college's student enrichment programming provides additional resources for our students to succeed in engaging and transforming the entertainment industry.

Seminar Series gives students an all-access pass to the inner workings of the entertainment and music industries. Top entertainment professionals and artists present topics relevant to their field in a conversational setting, covering a wide gamut of the industry from the historical side to emerging technologies. The format boasts a casual setting where the host guides the interviews creating a fascinating interaction between students and key decision makers. Past guests include both industry veterans and young professionals. Our veteran guests include: Brad Paisley, Vince Gill & Amy Grant, John Esposito (CEO of Warner Music Nashville), Jody Williams (VP of Writer/Publisher Relations at BMI), Pat Collins (Vice Chairman of SESAC), Andrew Kautz (COO of Big Machine Label Group), Ruta Sepetys (New York Times Best-Selling Author), Beth Mason Laird (Co-Founder/CEO of Creative Nation), Larry Gatlin, Gordon Kennedy, Matt Wertz, Drew Holcomb, Derek Webb and many others.

3 Steps to Student Success

1. SEMINARS

Attend seminars to learn about a wide variety of career paths and current trends within the entertainment industry. Begin networking by connecting with seminar speakers and other industry professionals in attendance. Seminars are typically scheduled for Tuesdays at 5 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. Check the Curb College calendar frequently for updates.

2. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Connect with your peers, gain hands-on industry experience and learn about your own skill set by getting involved in two or three Curb College student organizations. After a year of involvement, apply for a leadership position to further your professional skills.

3. EVENTS + NETWORKING

Throughout the year, Curb College hosts a variety of events and networking opportunities such as workshops, roundtables, and more! Be on the lookout for these in the weekly Curb College email.

Student Organizations

Curb College’s student organizations allow students to connect with peers, gain hands-on industry experience and learn about their skill sets while developing their professionalism and preparing for jobs in the entertainment industry.

The Audio Engineering Society (AES) is an internationally recognized branch of the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio. AES serves the public, its members and the industry by researching the latest advances in the ever-changing world of audio technology. Belmont's chapter boasts some 50+ members majoring in AET or music Business with a Production emphasis.

Belmont University's Student ALTI (Audio & Loudspeaker Technologies International) Chapter is an organization dedicated to connecting students and professionals interested in loudspeaker and other audio technologies. Through both local student events and professional conferences, ALTI provides a focused networking channel for the engineering side of the audio industry. This ALTI student chapter is intended for AET majors looking to go deeper into the design of the equipment they use but is open to anyone interested in learning more about audio technology.

The Curb Cafe is a great on-campus venue in the Curb Event Center that showcases the talent of Belmont students through a variety of outlets—from an ASCAP-sponsored Writers' Nights to impromptu open mic nights. Any Belmont student can book the Curb Cafe to showcase their music. In addition, the Curb Cafe hosts other local artists and up-and-coming Nashville musicians.

GRAMMY U Network is a unique and fast-growing community of college students who are pursuing a career in the recording industry. The Recording Academy created GRAMMY U to help prepare college students for their careers in the music industry through networking, educational programs and performance opportunities. GRAMMY U is designed to enhance students' current academic curriculum with access to recording industry professionals to give an "out of the classroom" perspective on the recording industry.

Belmont Service Corps is designed to offer members opportunities for experiential learning in the entertainment industry, thereby preparing them for their future careers. Service Corps is a student-led group of volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to numerous causes and events for hands-on industry experience. Members are provided with excellent resume building and networking opportunities, along with leadership roles. Past events include the Sundance Film Festival, the Grammy Awards, CMA Fest, the Academy of Country Music Awards and many more.

The Belmont Showcase Series is designed to give students real world training in all aspects of live performance production. Students are responsible for planning and executing six large scale concerts and four ASCAP Writer's Nights in a professional manner that highlights the musical and technical talents Belmont students have to offer. More than 100 students each year gain experience in areas such as stage design, lighting, artist management, video production, live sound reinforcement, publicity, and graphic design.

Student Programs

The Pipeline Project is a Curb College summer program consisting of a small group of innovative, self-driven, entrepreneurial students who have a strong understanding of emerging trends in the entertainment industry. The student team devotes their summer to open dialogue, research, and analysis of industry issues at the direction of sponsoring entertainment companies and their executives. During the summer, students receive a stipend and campus housing. In addition, the Pipeline team will enroll in a 1-credit Fall course that will focus on refining the research deliverable for a major presentation for the sponsoring company and larger entertainment community. Any major across campus may apply. The application process includes an online written application as well as extensive individual and group interviews. If you are passionate about the future of entertainment, Pipeline is for you!

One-on-One is an elite mentorship experience for The Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business's most promising juniors and seniors who exhibit leadership, innovation, and drive. It is an eight-month (September-May) dedication between students and industry professionals in an intentional, one on one, mentor relationship. The goal of the mentor relationships will be to encourage leadership potential and self-reflection designed to enable students to be effective leaders as new professionals in the music business and entertainment industry. Applications open at the beginning of each fall semester.

The BMI Catalog Cast is a competitive music industry experience comprised of 10-12 outstanding juniors and seniors and two Broadcast Music, Inc. supervisors. Over the course of the spring semester, students are given the chance to network and learn from numerous guest speakers from all facets of the industry. The students are sent into the music community to gather songs from over 50 music publishers and then given the opportunity to pitch for their favorite songs to be featured on a 10-song compilation. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for outstanding students who are looking for hands-on experience in song plugging. Applications will open during the fall semester.
