Alumnus Brings Music to Nashville Homes
Double alumnus Luke Sunderland and his wife Hannah are blending their individual strengths with Harmony Home, connecting local students with teachers who provide in-home music lessons. Their roster of instructors offers training in drums, violin, guitar, voice, piano and more, bringing music education directly to families’ doorsteps.
Luke Sunderland graduated from Belmont with his B.M. in commercial guitar with an emphasis in music business in 2021, and again with his Master of Music in commercial music in 2024. Hannah Sunderland, his wife and business partner, moved to Nashville after three years of teaching in Malaysia. The two married in October 2023 and started Harmony Home just a few months later. The business has grown to include 15 teachers serving 85 students.
The journey to create Harmony Home began as Luke was teaching guitar lessons while in grad school. He honed the skills needed to be a great teacher and discovered his passion for music education. “I thought, ‘I really enjoy what I do now, so I think it would be cool if I could expand this to include other instruments and other teachers,’” noted Luke. “By going through Belmont’s graduate program, I met a lot of great people that became the first teachers that still work for us. From there, I was able to create my core team when I started off.”
During his time in Belmont’s M.M. program, Luke took a class on entrepreneurship in the music industry. “It opened my eyes to all the different streams of revenue a musician can create for stability. That got the gears spinning in my head of how I could create another source of income for myself as a musician,” explained Luke. “It eventually culminated in us starting our business.”
Hannah manages the marketing and social media aspects of Harmony Home, and Luke manages administration and connecting teachers and students. “We have talents that complement each other,” explained Hannah. “As we were dreaming about the future and what we wanted it to look like, we looked for something we could build together.” In creating their business, Luke and Hannah felt called to keep their business Christ-centered and included that core value in the company’s mission statement.
“We want to create a great experience where families and students experience the love of Christ through the way we treat them,” Hannah added. “Being a Christian-run business does change the way we run and view our business. We want to steward well what God has given us.”
Harmony Home brings quality music lessons to Nashville families through skilled in-home instructors. By combining their backgrounds and strengths, the Sunderlands have built a business that supports students, families and teachers alike. Harmony Home continues to grow as they focus on providing accessible, engaging music education across the community.
