- Preston Taylor Ministries
Begin Anew is a transformational ministry reaching the working poor in Middle Tennessee through HSE (High School Equivalency), Computer and Job Skills, ESL (English as a Second Language), and Literacy classes. Each student in our program is matched with a mentor to give them spiritual encouragement and to help them set and reach goals. We also provide free childcare to adult students during class time.
Begin Anew is not currently meeting in person, so they definitely could use students who could do GED tutoring virtually. They are having alot of success having students do work online, but really benefit from having a tutor explain concepts that are difficult. At this time they only have on-line tutoring opportunities.
From our partners at Second Harvest:
"One of the ways people can help virtually is by hosting a Virtual Food Drive. A virtual food drive is a customizable webpage where people raise funds online. This is one of the ways to make the biggest impact because $1=4 meals!
We can also still accept physical food donations and traditional Food Drives! We’ve had a lot of success with folks hosting drive thru food drives to keep everything socially distanced.
And lastly we still have volunteer opportunities! This is our greatest need at the moment because group sizes have been reduced to 10-15 people but there is still so much food coming in that needs sorted. Our volunteer engagement team has gone above and beyond to keep every super safe for everyone.”
PTM is an afterschool and mentoring organization founded in 1998 to confront many of the problems present in the Preston Taylor public housing area, problems like drug use, gang involvement, teenage pregnancy, illiteracy, poor school performance, and crime. In order to provide hope for children and families living in this environment, PTM sponsors several avenues for building life-changing relationships. At PTM it’s about relationships!
A word from our partners at Preston Taylor:
“Our biggest needs right now are for volunteers in our afterschool program - helping with online school, leading enrichment activities, and just being with students in programming. All of our sites are at reduced capacity, masks are required by students, staff and volunteers, wellness checks are required by everyone upon arrival and sites are set up to provide for social distancing.”
