Biography
Dr. Hoffman joined the Belmont University faculty in 2000 and is Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Theory. He teaches courses in music theory and analysis, and aural skills.
Dr. Hoffman received a Ph.D. in music theory from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Church Music in music theory and voice from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Music in music education from Campbell University. He is author of The Rhythm Book, Harpeth River Publishing (2nd ed, 2009), a textbook for aural skills development based on the Takadimi system of rhythm pedagogy. A performer and scholar of early music, he was a fellow in the NEH-sponsored early music analysis seminar at Brandeis University. He has written scholarly papers on early music analysis, music theory pedagogy, and the piano music of Claude Debussy; and has articles published in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy and College Music Symposium. As a conductor, he directed church choirs, and was the founding conductor of the Lexington Community Orchestra. Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Dr. Hoffman was Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky and Ithaca College.
