Student Government Association

Students Serving Students

Our Mission

Belmont University’s Student Government Association aims to be the voice of the student body and to improve the university experience of both undergraduate and graduate students by providing opportunities to make differences through leadership and service.

Our Philosophy

We believe that change begins with the students and that’s what we want to emphasize through our roles. We believe that transparency is the best method in leadership. We are liaisons between the student body and administration and the emphasis is to keep both sides aware of the wants and needs of the other. We believe in Belmont’s mission statement and strive to uphold it. We have an incredible Senate that is ready to take on any challenge presented head on. There has been a renewal to the mentality of what it means to be a part of Student Government. We are consistently reminded of the passion of the students, staff, and faculty of the Belmont Community.

Branches of SGA

All executive powers of the Student Government Association are vested in the Executive Cabinet. All Executive Cabinet members must be in good standing with Belmont University. The Executive Cabinet meets on a weekly basis and also meets once a month with Belmont's Senior Leadership Team.

Executive Cabinet consists of the Student Body President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Director of Campus Communications and Outreach, and Director of Campus Events. The Student Body President and Vice President are elected by Belmont's student body. The other cabinet positions are appointed by the President and confirmed by Congress.

The role of Congress is to serve as a representative for all Belmont students. Each Congress member is required to serve on at least one SGA committee. The four committees that make up the Legislative Branch are:

  • Campus Communications and Outreach
  • Campus Events
  • Finance
  • Policy Review

All Congress members must be in good standing with Belmont University. Congress members run for office in the fall and/or spring, and are elected by the Belmont student body. All legislative powers of the Student Government Association are vested in the Student Congress.

All Judicial powers of the Student Government Association are vested in the Judicial Branch, which is made up of a Policy Review Committee Chair and Committee members.

All Judicial Branch members must be in good standing with Belmont University. The Judicial Branch ensures that Parliamentarian Procedure is observed at all times, hold sole jurisdiction for the interpretation of the SGA Constitution, and hears all cases involving violation of the SGA Constitution and/or By-Laws.
