Emergency Response
During an emergency, immediate and appropriate action is required of every member of the Belmont Community to prevent harm to others and ourselves. To ensure that an effective response occurs, each person on campus will need to be familiar with the emergency guidelines. Familiarizing yourself with these guidelines will allow emergency personnel to respond more quickly, efficiently, and directly to the crisis at hand.
For All Emergencies
Buildings to which members of the campus community have taken shelter during an emergency will not close until at least 15 minutes after the emergency has passed and/or stabilized. Students who will need to remain on campus until their ride has arrived may be instructed to wait in an open building, such as Beaman/Curb, Gabhart, etc.

• Call ext 6911 from any campus phone.
• Call 615.460.6911 from any other phone.
In larger emergencies that may impact the entire campus and/or community, first responders may not be able to reach you immediately. As a result, there are several simple steps that you can take to be prepared to handle emergencies on your own.
Be Prepared
In order to be prepared, you should:
- Have a Plan
Know what emergencies can impact you and have a plan for each. - Have a Communication Plan
Think about how you will communicate with family and friends during an emergency when cell phone systems may be overwhelmed – try texting and/or establishing an out-of-town emergency phone contact person who family and friends can call to check in and relay messages. - Keep a printed list of phone numbers
For family, friends, and other contacts in case your cell phone is inoperable, the battery is dead or in the event you lose your phone. It may be difficult to remember all the phone numbers that you have entered into your cell phone. Program emergency contact numbers in your cellphone using ICE, ICE2, ICE3 (in case of emergency). - Talk with care providers
At your child’s school and daycare about their emergency procedures if you have small children. - Locate two exits
In any building that you frequent. - Have an Emergency Kit
In your car and/or residence with a flashlight, whistle, small first aid kit and other items to sustain you for three days. - Take a CPR/First Aid Class
Emergency Notification
The following methods may be used to notify the campus community of various emergency events that may impact students, staff, faculty and visitors on the Belmont Campus.
- Belmont Alert – Belmont’s emergency mass notification system. Sign up through your MyBelmont account by clicking the “Belmont Alerts Sign Up” link under the “Campus Security” tab.

Belmont Alerts
For the most significant and urgent threats, Belmont also uses an emergency alert system to quickly notify a mass audience through emails, text messages and/or voice calls. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up to get important news quickly in the event of an emergency.
To enter or update information in Belmont Alerts:
- Sign in to your MyBelmont account and select the “Belmont Alerts Sign Up” link from the “Campus Security and Safety” folder on the left side of the page.
- Your Belmont-affiliated email address is automatically opted into all emergency alerts.
- You may choose to add notification via text message and voice calls to your cell and/or landline numbers.
- You may also add phone numbers and email addresses of other family members. Please add the emergency contacts you want to be notified in the fields provided.

After the Emergency
Workplace Injury/Illness
- Make sure the injured person has received appropriate medical care.
- Call Belmont Campus Security and EMS for any injuries that require immediate medical attention.
- Notify the injured person’s immediate supervisor to file appropriate reports.
Building Damages
- Call Facilities Management Division at 615.460.6670
- Notify Belmont Campus Security after normal business hours and on weekends.
- Take the necessary steps to protect property from further damage.
- Report all claims upon discovery of the incident to the Office of Risk Management & Compliance within 48 hours at 615.460.5429 or riskmanagement@belmont.edu.
