Dr. Juan A. Sanchez is the Chief Academic Officer at HCA Healthcare, leading accreditation, medical education, research, and strategic academic partnerships. A distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon, he has directed award-winning teams in open-heart surgery and transplantation.
As a physician executive, Dr. Sanchez has focused his career on reducing clinical variation, mitigating clinical risks, and improving health system performance. He integrates high-value care principles into medical education and team-based models to enhance clinical quality and effectiveness.
A recognized thought leader in patient safety and systems science, he has lectured widely and served as faculty at the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. He is the editor of the textbook Surgical Patient Care: Improving Safety, Quality, and Value (Springer), the Handbook of Perioperative and Procedural Patient Safety (Elsevier), and is an Associate Editor of the journal Patient Safety in Surgery (Springer). He was a founding member of the National Board of Medical Examiners' Patient Safety Taskforce and has contributed to the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. His national service includes roles with the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award Program and the Association for periOperative Nurses (AORN).
Consistently recognized among top doctors in the New York Metro Area and Best Doctors in America, Dr. Sanchez has received numerous accolades, including the Bosomworth Quality Award at the University of Kentucky and a Kentucky Colonel commission for his contributions to organ donation and transplantation. He holds degrees from the University of Miami, Harvard University, and the University of Florida, where he was a Wolffe Scholar. Board-certified in surgery and thoracic surgery, he completed surgical training at Georgetown, Yale, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia and is. He also served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
