Biography

Dr. Paul Barach, B.Sci. Med, MD, MPH, Maj (ret.)  is a practicing clinician scientist with background in biomedical engineering who applies tools and methods of systems safety, human factors, implementation and improvement sciences to better the quality and safety of hospitals and public health programs to strengthen service delivery processes. He trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and is double board certified in Anesthesia and Critical care. He is a former senior hospital executive, associate dean and research center director,  and has extensive management experience advising academic medical centers and large healthcare systems about strategic and operational development in complex healthcare and community settings. He is committed to leading research that makes a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of people and their communities. His work has been supported by over $26M by US, European and private funding agencies and he has published over 300 papers and 5. books He is an expert in analyzing and evaluating the implementation of strategic change, especially in global health and care systems. He has successfully co-advised more than 50 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. He leads the Disaster and Emergency efforts for ASPHER (Association of Schools of Public Health in Europe) and is Chair of the Accreditation Board of APHEA (Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation). He holds academic positions at the Thomas Jefferson University College of Population Health, Imperial College London, University of Birmingham, Sigmund Freud University, National Cancer Institute of South Korea, University of Queensland, Riphah Islamic University of Pakistan and MUHAS University, Tanzania.  He is an elected Fellow of Academy of University Anesthesiologists (AUA).
