Biography
Andrew Michel, MD, is associate professor of psychiatry in the Department of Integrated Medical Education at the Frist College of Medicine at Belmont University, where he serves as curriculum committee chair. He earned his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program. He is board certified in psychiatry.
Dr. Michel’s scholarship focuses on the intersection of philosophy, particularly virtue ethics, theology, contemplative spirituality and clinical psychiatry. His academic work is shaped by extensive clinical experience caring for individuals facing mental health challenges, including trauma, addiction and disruptions of mood and cognition. His clinical approach emphasizes contemplative presence and solidarity, with the goal of healing and human flourishing amid vulnerability.
He previously served as assistant training director for the Vanderbilt Psychiatry Residency Training Program and as chief of psychiatry for the Veterans Affairs hospital system across Middle Tennessee. Dr. Michel also contributed to case development and facilitation for Vanderbilt Medical School’s case-based learning curriculum, Curriculum 2.0, during the Foundations of Medical Knowledge year. He and co-authors Jeffrey P. Bishop and M. Therese Lysaught received the 2021 Expanded Reason Award for their book Biopolitics After Neuroscience: Morality and the Economy of Virtue.
