Biography

Ashley Bassel Griffith teaches Legal Information and Communication I & II.  Prior to joining Belmont’s faculty, she was Deputy General Counsel at Tennessee’s State Medicaid Agency, TennCare.  In that role, she led a large team of attorneys and support staff in handling matters ranging from litigation, regulatory compliance, contract oversight, employment law, and administrative appeals.  She also served as an Administrative Judge for the agency, presiding over eligibility appeal hearings and leading a team of AJs.  Prior to her career in public service, Professor Griffith was a litigation associate at Bass, Berry & Sims PLC, where she represented individual and corporate clients, including numerous Fortune 500 companies, in complex litigation matters including contract disputes, trust and estate, state and local tax, general commercial, and products liability. 

Professor Griffith earned her Juris Doctorate from Vanderbilt University Law School, where she served as a Managing Editor of the Law Review and Vice President of the Vanderbilt Bar Association. A “Double Dore,” she also graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts.   

Professor Griffith is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Association of Legal Writing Directors.  She is a graduate of the Nashville Emerging Leaders, the Tennessee Leadership Academy for Excellence in Disability Services, and the Franklin Covey Leadership Program.   

Professor Griffith is also a proud mother of three daughters, Stella, Violet, and Cecilia, and an old long-haired dachshund named Gus.  She and her husband Brian enjoy spending time at Nashville’s Warner Parks, traveling, cooking, and attending college sporting events.
