Erica Aubrey

Biography

Erica Aubrey holds a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance with an emphasis in musical theatre from New York University. Before relocating to Nashville, Mrs. Aubrey spent a decade working as a professional actress in New York.  Most recently, she played Mary Todd Lincoln in American Prophet; in the words of Frederick Douglass at Arena Stage in Washington D.C in the summer of 2022. and at New York’s famed Apollo Theater in the Fall of 2019. While based in NY, she performed the role of Mrs. Newton in the Chicago-based Broadway tryout of Amazing Grace, directed by Gabriel Barre and choreographed by Tony Award winner Christopher Gatelli. She was the standby for Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara in Far From Heaven at Off-Broadway’s prestigious Playwrights Horizons, directed by four-time Tony nominee Michael Greif. She performed alongside Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth in Music in the Air at the New York City Center Encores! series, and has performed principal roles in Equity theaters across the country, including the Ryman Auditorium, Casa Mañana, Theatre Aspen, Gateway Playhouse, American Folklore Theater, Ogunquit Playhouse, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Flat Rock Playhouse and New York Stage and Film. Notably, she played Shelby in The Spitfire Grill in the 10th Anniversary production directed by the show’s composer, James Valcq, and played Judy Bernly in the first regional premiere of 9 to 5: the Musical starring Sally Struthers. She has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman as a back-up singer and has also worked as a back-up singer for the jam band Phish, performing in a sold-out New Year’s Eve concert at Madison Square Garden. While in NY she performed in concerts with and on recordings for composers Alan Menken, Craig Carnelia, Stephen Schwartz and Adam Gwon. She can be seen on the small screen in Season 1 of the Netflix/Marvel Comic series A.K.A. Jessica Jones and a commercial for Farm Bureau Insurance.

In Nashville, she remains active as an actress, session singer and voice-over artist, lending her voice to scores for video games, demos and commercials. She has been seen as Patricia in the Dan Fogelberg musical Part of the Plan at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and Donna in Mamma Mia! at Studio Tenn, working alongside many of her students at Belmont! Her voice can be heard on the Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly Hologram tours as the sole background vocalist. She is the voice of Lucille in the MTI cast recording of Junie B. Jones the Musical available on Amazon and iTunes, Florika in the MTI licensing recording of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Mrs. Meyers in the licensing recording of Disney’s Freaky Friday, and has also lent her voice to MTI’s new licensing recordings of Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. Her voice can also be heard in the after-hours light show music at Disneyland and in the Halloween parade music at Tokyo Disney.

Passionate about teaching, she believes that every voice is unique and enjoys tailoring her lessons to the individual. Her goal is to create a nurturing studio environment, while giving students the tools required to meet the growing demands of a career in musical theatre by cross-training the voice in all styles that make up the genre.  Above all, when solid technique is in place, Mrs. Aubrey believes finding the story within a song and having a strong personal connection to the lyric ultimately frees the voice to go where it needs to go. She teaches applied voice, directs musicals and the NYC Senior Showcase for the department, and teaches the Senior Capstone class.

Mrs. Aubrey holds a Level 3 certification in Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method, and completed an intensive course in vocal pedagogy while she was a graduate student at NYU with Jeanine LoVetri, a leading teaching artist of contemporary commercial music styles. She has students working on Broadway, in National Tours, regional theatres and theme parks, and works with Nashville recording artists. In 2019 and 2020 she had students named as Emerging Artists in the prestigious Lotte Lenya vocal competition. She is a founding member of the Young Professionals of the The Actors Fund in New York, and is a member of Actors Equity Association, SAG- AFTRA and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.  

She resides in Nashville with her husband, guitarist and actor Miles Aubrey, and their rescue dog Lucy.
