Biography

Dr. George Shannon II serves as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Athletic Band Director at Belmont University. In this role, he conducts the Concert Band, directs the Bruin Blast Pep Band, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and music education, and supervises student interns. 
 
A native of Florida, Dr. Shannon brings experience from the secondary level, where he previously taught band and served in school leadership. He is highly active in the field as a guest clinician for middle and high school bands and serves as a conductor for honors bands across the region. Driven by a passion for the podium, he received wind band conducting instruction from Matthew McCutchen, Richard Clary, and Patrick Dunnigan and studied orchestral conducting with William Wiedrich. He has also furthered his craft through conducting symposia with Sarah McKoin.
 
An active scholar, Dr. Shannon has presented his research at both the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA) and the Tennessee Music Education Association (TMEA) Professional Development Conferences and is published in Teaching Music magazine. His doctoral dissertation explored the nuances of music performance self-efficacy among undergraduate students, specifically examining differences across race and ethnicity.
 
Dr. Shannon holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of South Florida, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from National-Louis University, and a Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education from Florida State University. Professional memberships include the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Tennessee Music Education Association (TMEA), the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and the Center for Music Education Research (CMER) at the University of South Florida.
