Biography
Dr. Irene (Sarmiento) Lawrence received her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Applied Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her. M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication Arts are from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before coming to Belmont in 2022, she taught for three years in the Department of Rhetoric and Communication Studies at the University of La Verne.
Dr. Lawrence's research includes interpersonal communication, utilization of advice, persuasion, language use in groups, and social media. She is specifically interested in the role of advice communication in close relationships. She has presented her research at regional, national, and international conferences and has published her work in Adolescent Research Review, Journal of Forestry, and Media Psychology. She is an active member of the National Communication Association.
In her free time, Dr. Lawrence enjoys attending yoga or pilates class, working out, reading, traveling back to her home state of California, and most of all, spending time with her husband.
