From Music to Masterful Design

Brad RamseyBrad Ramsey, a 2003 graduate of Belmont's commercial voice program who minored in studio art, has orchestrated a career that harmonizes his diverse talents. Now an accomplished interior designer based in Nashville, Brad's journey post-graduation illustrates the power of creativity and adaptability.

During his time at Belmont, Brad immersed himself in campus life within the College of Music & Performing Arts, formerly the College of Visual and Performing Arts. He sang in Phoenix for three years and was a featured artist in the Gospel Music Showcase during his senior year. These experiences, coupled with his work in the School of Music office, provided Brad with a unique perspective on the dedication required to excel in creative fields.

"What I learned the most in my time at Belmont was how to always be hungry to be better at my craft – whether that was music or art,” Brad reflected. “Being surrounded by so much skill and talent was inspiring to me. This hunger for improvement would prove instrumental in his future career pivot.

After graduation, Brad pursued music writing and performing, even co-writing a radio single released by Tracy Lawrence. However, his creative path eventually led him to interior design. Brad honed his skills at a premier Nashville design firm and was featured in an HGTV show called “Interiors Inc.”, absorbing invaluable lessons that would later fuel his entrepreneurial spirit.

Brad RamseyIn 2013, Brad launched his own firm, Brad Ramsey Interiors. He describes his design philosophy as instinctual, “driven by a pursuit of integrity, balance and quality.” His artistic background from Belmont plays a crucial role in his current profession. "I utilize my ability to sketch and draw, as well as my sense for color and balance, all the time in my interior design career," he explained.

Brad's success in the design world has not gone unnoticed. Recently named by House Beautiful as part of their 2024 Next Wave, he considers building his business from the ground up his proudest achievement. What started in his basement 11 years ago has blossomed into a respected firm with a dedicated staff, a design studio and national recognition.

For Brad, inspiration comes from his clients. He finds gratification in learning what makes a house a home for different people and guiding them through the journey of selections, materials and design. This client-focused approach sets Brad's work apart in the competitive world of interior design.

To current and prospective students interested in design, Brad advised, "Remember that technical skills are only a part of the job. The finesse it takes to direct clients in the design process while also listening to their wants, desires and needs and incorporating them into the plan is something that takes years to learn." He continued, “Working under someone you respect and taking the time to learn the business without rushing to be the lead is an invaluable experience.”

Brad's story is a powerful reminder of the unexpected places a diverse liberal arts education can lead. Today, he carries with him the lessons learned at Belmont - to stay hungry, be inspired by talent around you and pursue every opportunity with excellence.
