New chemical and biological health studies, education policy majors to launch June 2025

Belmont University is expanding its Adult Degree Program with the addition of two new majors: chemical and biological health studies and education policy, launching in June 2025.

These additions bring the total number of Adult Degree Program majors to 18, further strengthening a program that has helped more than 1,400 adult students earn their degrees since its launch in 1998. Designed for adults, the Adult Degree Program offers career-focused pathways for first-time college students, transfer students and those seeking a second bachelor's degree.

The launch follows Belmont's recent announcement of a significant tuition reduction for Adult Degree Program students, reinforcing the University's commitment to accessible, high-quality education.

"These new majors address growing demand in critical fields and reflect our mission to support adult learners who want to create new opportunities for themselves by achieving their academic and professional goals," said Kim Powell, assistant director of Interdisciplinary Studies and Global Education, home to Belmont's Adult Degree Program.

Chemical and Biological Health Studies

Belmont's new chemical and biological health studies major is designed for adults preparing for careers in health care or graduate study in fields such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, physician assistant programs and more. The program offers a strong scientific foundation along with personalized support through Belmont's Pre-Health Advising resources.

"We are excited to launch this program for individuals who are often career changers, often overlooked but passionate about entering health care," said Dr. Beth Bowman, assistant dean and pre-health advisor in the College of Science and Mathematics. "We provide the academic rigor and one-on-one support these focused, motivated students need to succeed in competitive graduate programs and reach their potential. I am so excited to be able to work individually with the students as they navigate their journeys in their own unique way."

Education Policy

The education policy major is designed to equip future educators, advocates and policymakers with the skills to lead and act on behalf of students across the U.S. and globally. This interdisciplinary program prepares students to improve educational conditions, opportunities and outcomes through coursework in education, sociology, political science and business.

"The education policy major fills a critical gap in preparing professionals who understand both the classroom and the broader systems that shape educational outcomes," said Dr. Jim McIntyre, dean of the College of Education and assistant provost for academic excellence. "Our graduates will have the unique perspective needed to drive meaningful change in education policy, whether at the school, district or national level. This program reflects Belmont's commitment to developing leaders who can transform education for the next generation."

Ideal for students pursuing graduate study in educational leadership, social sciences or law, as well as those seeking certification in teaching, counseling or student services, the program offers a flexible pathway into education careers. It also appeals to those exploring the field before committing to licensure. The major integrates with several colleges at Belmont, offering a uniquely broad and customizable academic experience grounded in real-world impact.
