Student Stories and Experiences

From your first step onto Belmont's campus as an elementary education student, you'll discover a journey that transforms passionate educators into classroom-ready teachers. Through the eyes of our students and recent graduates, explore what makes the Belmont education experience unique.

Finding Your Community from Day One

Molly CallaghanThe transition to college can feel overwhelming, but Belmont's education program creates an immediate sense of belonging. "I remember meeting our dean for the first time, worried that I'd just blend in with the crowd," said Kacy Dabbs, a junior in the elementary education program. "But he remembered my name. Every time we cross paths, he greets me by name and checks in, which means so much."

This personal attention extends throughout the entire program. "The College of Education isn't just a department –– it's a welcoming community that has made me feel so supported," said Grace Miller, who will graduate in December 2024 with a degree in elementary education: interdisciplinary studies. "I've built strong bonds with my professors and classmates because it feels like everyone is working together towards common goals."

Your Journey Through Real Classroom Experience

Unlike traditional programs that delay hands-on experience, Belmont education students begin their practical teaching journey early. "Through practicum student teaching and tutoring opportunities, I built a strong professional network before graduation," said Chasity Donald, who now teaches at Metro Nashville Public Schools. "These connections helped me secure my first teaching position even before completing my degree."

"When I started in my own classroom, everything from organizing my space to establishing daily routines felt natural because of my extensive practicum experiences at Belmont," said Allison Marlow, now a kindergarten team lead and Teacher of the Year finalist.

Daily Life in the Program

Blair HerrodAs a Belmont education student, your days combine rigorous academic preparation with practical teaching experience. "Every day, I'm surrounded by faculty and peers who genuinely care about my growth," said Kate Downey, Class of 2024. "The environment combines challenging coursework with incredible emotional support."

Your typical week includes:

  • Engaging coursework in teaching methods and child development
  • Hands-on experience in local classrooms
  • One-on-one mentoring with experienced faculty
  • Collaborative projects with fellow future teachers
  • Real-world teaching practice through practicum

Growth Through Mentorship

"We create daily opportunities to support our students' development," said Dr. Annie Insana, director of clinical practice. "It's about building confident, capable educators who are ready for their own classrooms."

This mentorship continues beyond graduation. "The mentoring I received from Belmont professors shaped how I now guide newer teachers in my own career," said Lauren Brinkley, who teaches at Eagle View Elementary. "It's a ripple effect of positive impact."

Making Your Teaching Dreams Accessible

"We're actively working to make the teaching profession more accessible and affordable," said Dr. Jim McIntyre, dean of the College of Education and assistant provost for academic excellence. The program offers various financial aid options and scholarship opportunities specifically designed for education students.

Your Impact Starts Here

"Seeing a young person learn, grow and reach their full potential – there's no more fulfilling work," said McIntyre. "Teaching is truly a calling, and if you feel drawn to this profession, we're here to help you answer that call."

Recent graduate testimonials demonstrate the program's lasting impact: "The practical experience gave me confidence from day one in my own classroom." "I felt prepared for every aspect of teaching, from lesson planning to parent communication." "The mentoring relationships continue even after graduation."
