How Belmont helped one student build a foundation of confidence, compassion and community

When Taylar Sharp-Hickerson first arrived at Belmont, she brought with her a heart for helping others and a desire to make a difference. What she couldn't have predicted was how quickly her academic journey would evolve into a clear professional calling, supported by a community that would help her find not just her career path, but her voice.

As a social work major and active campus leader, Sharp-Hickerson has immersed herself in both academic excellence and community engagement. Through meaningful hands-on experiences, dedicated mentorship from faculty and active involvement in campus life, she has transformed from an eager freshman into a confident future social worker with a clear vision for serving children and families.

The Experience That Changed Everything

Taylar Sharp-Hickerson"One of the most impactful hands-on experiences I've had at Belmont was through my Introduction to Social Work course, where I completed 18 service-learning hours with The Family Wellbeing Program," Sharp-Hickerson shared. "Those hours were truly life-changing."

What made this experience so pivotal? Working directly with children and families, Sharp-Hickerson discovered her passion for supporting children during their earliest developmental years — specifically children from birth to age three. This was more than just another class requirement; it was the moment her professional purpose clicked into place.

"This hands-on experience deepened my understanding of social work and also clarified the direction I want to take in my future career," she said.

Building Connections That Matter

At Belmont, Sharp-Hickerson has found more than just academic knowledge — she has discovered a community that actively invests in her growth. As a student worker for the School of Social Work, she's built relationships with faculty that extend well beyond classroom walls.

"Every professor has encouraged me to become the best version of myself and has supported me every step of the way," she said.

This mentorship has opened doors, including her selection as a Dean's Ambassador for the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Her campus involvement doesn't stop there. As a Bruin Recruiter, Sharp-Hickerson represents Belmont to prospective students and their families during campus tours and admission events.

"I have the privilege of sharing my personal journey, answering questions about campus life and helping students envision their future at Belmont," she said. This experience has strengthened her communication skills while deepening her connection to the University community.

The Belmont Difference

"What makes Belmont's Social Work program truly unique is the deep sense of personal connection and individualized support," Sharp-Hickerson shared. "From the very beginning, I've experienced one-on-one advising that goes far beyond academic planning — it's a genuine investment in my personal and professional growth."

In a field centered on human connection, this personalized approach to education makes all the difference.

"The faculty take the time to truly know me, not just as a student, but as a person. They create a humanizing environment where I feel valued, heard and supported in every aspect of my journey,” she said. “They’re not just preparing us for a career, they’re shaping who we are as compassionate, capable individuals ready to serve others."

Confidence Cultivated in Community
