Why Student Health Insurance Is Required
Students' wellbeing is a top priority at Belmont. In alignment with this commitment, Belmont requires all full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students to have health care coverage while enrolled at the University.
This policy is rooted in our dedication to students’ health and safety. Adequate health insurance safeguards against unexpected medical costs and ensures access to essential health care resources when needed, promoting uninterrupted focus on your academic journey.
Fall 2025 Insurance Enrollment Information
For those who are uninsured or seek coverage for areas near campus or wherever residing while attending Belmont, Belmont now offers a comprehensive and affordable health insurance plan. Additional details on the plan can be found below. The deadline to confirm your enrollment in the Belmont SHIP or to waive the plan with proof of other health insurance coverage will correspond to the semester’s tuition payment deadline, and the portal will open in May for Fall 2025 plan enrollment and waivers.
Note: There is no enrollment or waiver process for current students attending summer classes who were enrolled in the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 terms. However, new students starting courses in the summer, including some graduate programs and Bell Tower students, will need to complete the enrollment or waiver process starting June 1.
Students with Insurance
If you already have health insurance coverage through an employer, family member or through the U.S. health insurance marketplace, you will simply need to upload proof of insurance to the Belmont SHIP portal when it opens in May. Uploading proof of insurance by the deadline of July 7 will ensure that the insurance premium charge is not included on your bill.
After this deadline, the charge for insurance will appear on your bill. Once you provide proof of insurance, the insurance premium charge will be removed from your account within 7-10 days (Dates may vary slightly for some graduate programs including medicine and law).
Students without Insurance or without Insurance in TN
Students without adequate health coverage in Tennessee (or wherever residing while enrolled at Belmont, such as Belmont East/West) may choose to enroll in the Belmont SHIP through United Healthcare. The Belmont SHIP provides comprehensive coverage, including emergency, non-emergency, preventive care, mental health and prescription drug services.
Students who do not provide proof of insurance by the July 7 deadline will be automatically opted in to the Belmont SHIP, and the charge will be included in the student bill.
