Erin Carson is an instructor of journalism at Belmont University. She has a master's degree in magazine, newspaper and online journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Belmont.
For nearly a decade, Erin reported on the intersection of technology, science and culture—fields that increasingly shape how people interact with the world and each other. Most recently, she was a senior writer with the leading global consumer tech news and reviews publication CNET. Her reporting, including long-form and multimedia, has taken her from the Johnson Space Center, where NASA uses virtual reality to train astronauts, to the darker corner of the internet to explore topics like toxic fan culture and the rise of hate online. Over the years, Erin covered marquee media events like SXSW and CES, but was equally fascinated to write about the weird, viral side of internet culture. She reported on the 2019 “Area 51 Raid” where meme enthusiasts and curious crowds converged in the Nevada desert.
Always on the lookout for stories that illustrate the wild experience of living through dramatic technological change, she's tackled topics like virtual reality and artificial intelligence.
With this experience, Erin aims to help train young journalists to be versatile, multi-platform storytellers for the digital age. When not teaching, she enjoys painting, reading and keeping up with tech news.
