Biography

Dr. Shankel earned her B.A. in Biology her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Religion and Philosophy from Greenville College in 2001, followed by an M.S.N. at Vanderbilt University, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Recognizing the importance of lifelong learning and desiring to make a meaningful impact on patient care, she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Belmont University where her research and scholarship centered on app-based telemonitoring of pediatric asthma.

Dr. Shankel came to Belmont in 2008 as an adjunct instructor. She steadily climbed the ranks to become a tenured associate professor in the Inman College of Nursing, where she currently serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Nursing and oversees three DNP tracks: Healthcare Leadership DNP, Family Nurse Practitioner DNP, and Post-Master’s DNP.

A puzzle-lover at heart, Dr. Shankel enjoys finding opportunities to enhance outcomes through data-driven initiatives, both in healthcare and in academia. Similarly, she enjoys teaching students to think beyond the individual patient encounter to assess complex situations and develop practical solutions to improve population-level patient care and healthcare processes.

When she is not working, Dr. Shankel can be found cooking, skiing, or swinging on the porch swing with her husband and three daughters.
