Campbellsville University makes campus visit to learn from dynamic leadership and service framework

The Belmont Office of Leadership Development presented a day-long experience to administrators, faculty and staff from Campbellsville University, Nov. 15. The Campbellsville team traveled to campus to learn more about leadership and service at Belmont, particularly Belmont’s way of operationalizing leadership development and service-learning in and outside of the classroom.

“Leadership development is everyone’s business at Belmont,” noted Dr. AdriAnne Sternberg, associate dean of students, leadership & engagement. “We model the exemplary leadership we hope to see in our students, and we partner across campus to ensure that these developmental experiences are accessible to every person.”

Campbellsville is currently determining the best strategies, systems, models and processes needed to work collaboratively across its campus to achieve their goal to establish a service excellence institute.

This year BOLD is celebrating seven years of effective values-driven, competency-based leadership development with 2,700 students actively engaged in GOLD (Graduate Opportunities in Leadership Development) and BOLD programs.

Six Belmont students shared their leadership journey with the Campbellsville visitors, including junior Isaiah Henderson and senior Drew Sample.

“Leadership is different for every person, but every person can lead,” said Henderson. “BOLD helps equip us with the mentors, skills and tools we need to be successful.”

Both student leaders also presented at BOLD’s Pulse Getaway and Student Leadership Advance at the Nelson Andrews Leadership Lodge.

“I kept coming back because of the people, the welcoming environment and the level of care shown by the people who were leading,” said Sample.

In addition to BOLD, the Campbellsville administration also heard from Belmont representatives from Educational Innovation; Student Success and Flourishing; Service Learning; Formation & Leadership Development; School of Theology; College of Nursing; College of Entertainment & Music Business; Social Entrepreneurship and Aspirational Excellence.

Participants from both institutions will remain in contact, sharing resources, ideas and strategies to help Campbellsville University realize their goals.

Campbellsville’s desire to visit showcases that Belmont’s student leadership development framework, service-learning achievements and approaches to transformative and experiential learning is an effective model that other institutions recognize and aspire to learn from.
