CPHS Student Spotlight: Smyth Harper

April 17, 2024 | by Clara LoCricchio

For mental health counseling graduate student Smyth Harper, pursuing a career in counseling was a natural choice. Fueled by compassion and a desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others, he is dedicated to using his own experiences and insights to guide and support those struggling with mental health challenges.

Harper's choice to pursue a career in mental health counseling was profoundly influenced by his own mental health journey. During a challenging period in high school, therapy offered him much-needed hope. Inspired to give back the same way he was helped, Harper was drawn to mental health counseling to positively impact others — offering the same support and empowerment he once received.

Reflecting on his decision to enroll in Belmont's Mental Health Counseling program, Harper credits the faculty's unwavering support and dedication to student success as a driving force behind his choice. "All of my professors are extremely supportive... They genuinely want to see us succeed in whatever direction we take in our lives and careers," he shared.

Amidst the rigors of academic life, Harper has found solace and inspiration through his involvement in the Wayfarer program — a unique platform where nursing and counseling students come together to explore spirituality, self-reflection and community. "It has really helped me grow in my spiritual life and has given me new skills on how to self-reflect and better understand myself," said Harper.

In his academic pursuits, Harper’s passion for cultural competency and understanding shines through. Engaging in projects that delve into the rich tapestry of global cultures, Harper’s exploration of Japanese art not only broadened his horizons but also deepened his appreciation for diversity — a crucial aspect of effective counseling practice.

Looking ahead, graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter for Harper — a chapter brimming with aspirations and possibilities. Eager to continue his educational journey, Harper intends to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a focus on psychopathology and addiction research.

With sights set on opening his own private practice one day, Harper’s time in Belmont's Mental Health Counseling program serves as a solid foundation for his future endeavors. "I know that Belmont’s Mental Health Counseling program is preparing me extremely well for those future goals," said Harper.

As Harper’s journey unfolds, his unwavering dedication to the field of mental health counseling serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration — a testament to the transformative power of empathy, perseverance, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
