Empowerment through awareness, action and compassion
Suicide Prevention Week, taking place Sept. 9-13, offers an important opportunity for the Belmont community to come together, raise awareness and support those affected by suicide.
This week-long initiative aims to foster hope, build resilience and promote mental health awareness among students, faculty and staff. By participating in the diverse range of events planned, the community can collectively work towards creating a more compassionate and understanding campus environment.
The week's comprehensive schedule includes:
Monday, Sept. 9:
- Chapel: How Suicide Taught Me About Compassion*: Hear from Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee on fostering self-compassion to build authentic community, addressing mental health and suicide awareness while exploring technology's effects on wellbeing.
- Faces of Hope: A pop-up portrait session where participants can share a message of hope and be a face of hope for others.
- Mental Health in Entertainment | Documentary: Amy*: A screening and discussion of the Amy Winehouse documentary, led by Al Andrews, Founder of Porter’s Call.
- Mindful Activism*: Join Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee for an important conversation about how to care for yourself while advocating for things you believe in.
Tuesday, Sept. 10:
- Sharde Curry — Surviving Loss*: Hear from alumna Sharde Curry about how suicide has affected her life and how she cares for herself, her family and her community.
- Rest Session*: Join Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee for an intentional REST Session, which will include breathing and mindfulness exercises.
- World Suicide Prevention Day Walk: Join Active Minds on a walk to 12th South – and participate in discussions along the way to honor World Suicide Prevention Day.
Wednesday, Sept. 11:
- It Must Be Wednesday: Mental Health Focus
- Labyrinth: Come and partake in a walking meditation Labyrinth on campus.
Thursday, Sept. 12:
- Sound Bath*: Come experience a therapeutic sound bath led by Nashville's Anne Sensing and Scott Owings.
Friday, Sept. 13:
Looking ahead, Belmont will participate in the Out of Darkness Walk, Saturday, Nov. 2*. This event provides an opportunity to remember those impacted by suicide and move together towards a hope-filled future.
All members of the Belmont community are encouraged to engage in these events throughout the week. Each activity offers a distinct perspective on mental health awareness and suicide prevention, from educational sessions and artistic expressions to mindfulness practices and community-building exercises.
