Eligibility & Deadlines

Applying is the first step in making your Study Abroad experience a reality. Once you confirm you are eligible to apply for your preferred program and term, you must then apply through the Belmont Global portal within the deadlines listed below.

Students must meet the following Belmont University eligibility requirements to receive approval to study abroad. Belmont approval alone guarantees admission to Belmont Short-Term Faculty-Led study abroad programs. Students applying for Provider, Exchange, and Direct Enroll programs must also meet admission requirements set by our international partners to be accepted to the program.

To be eligible for a Short-Term Faculty Led (Spring Break, Maymester, or Summer) program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have completed your first year on campus before the program starts
  • Be in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing before the program starts
  • Have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Submit a completed application form with a faculty recommendation (if required) by the program deadline
  • After acceptance to a program, meet all administrative and financial deadlines for pre-departure materials

To be eligible for a Provider, Exchange, or Direct Enroll (Semester, Academic Year, or Independent Summer) program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have completed your first year on campus before the program starts
  • Be in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing at the time of application and when the program starts
  • Have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average
  • Submit a completed application form with a faculty recommendation by the program deadline
  • Meet language requirement (where applicable)
  • After acceptance to a program, meet all administrative and financial deadlines for pre-departure materials

Additional Requirements

  • Students may not study abroad for three consecutive terms.
  • Students may only participate in two semesters abroad. A third semester abroad is only possible through Belmont USA.
  • Please note, short-term faculty-led programs are not considered semesters.
  • Graduating Seniors
  • Some Belmont students may be eligible to study abroad during their final semester.  This is not recommended due to transcript deadlines for graduation set by The Registrar's Office. Belmont cannot guarantee international transcripts will arrive in time for graduation.

When choosing to study abroad one's graduation semester, it is critical to understand that if the grades are not received from abroad and posted by Belmont's stated time limit, the Registrar's Office will re-schedule graduation for the following semester (e.g. August or May). Belmont USA programs are recommended for students wishing to participate in a program during their final semester.

  • In all instances, Belmont University reserves the right to approve, retract or deny a student's participation in study abroad. All decisions are at the discretion of the Office of Study Abroad.
