Academic Coaching
Learning Specialists specialize in academic coaching and guide students throughout their medical school journey. Academic Coaching offers personalized, student-centered support to help medical students meet their academic and personal goals. Through guidance, skill-building, and accountability, academic coaching empowers students to navigate the challenges of medical school and optimize learning. Student Success Programs collaborates with Student Activities and Wellness, Student Support Services, and other campus departments and resources to provide appropriate referrals and holistic support. The goal of this specialized service is to support each student in their development as a well-rounded, highly skilled, and self-aware professional.
Step 1 and Step 2 Support
Our Learning Specialists offer Step 1 and Step 2 readiness support tailored to meet each student’s unique needs and study preferences. We focus on comprehensive study plans, test-taking strategies, exam performance reviews and feedback, stress management, and information on study resources to help each student tackle these critical exams with confidence.
Peer-Academic Leader Program (PALs)
The Peer-Academic Leader Program (PALs) provide peer-to- peer learning support and connects students with excelling upperclassmen who provide academic mentorship, study support, and emotional guidance in a collaborative environment. PALs help students strengthen their connection to the medical school community, improve academic performance through peer-to-peer learning, and offer valuable insights into successfully navigating medical school. This service is free and available to all FCOM students.
Individualized Learning Plans
An Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) is a framework that helps students identify their unique learning needs, set goals, and map out actionable steps to achieve academic and professional success. Our Learning Specialists assist students in creating and revising ILPs at critical junctures—such as the first semester of medical school, board prep, and clerkships—to ensure continued progress and success.
Learning Style Assessments
We want students to know who they are as learners as they begin their medical school journey. Students can identify their unique learning preferences with our Learning Style Assessments. We offer tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), and Smarter Measure (SM). Our Learning Specialists guide students in analyzing and applying their results to create personalized study strategies that optimize strengths and identify potential growth opportunities.
Self-Directed Learner Resources
We encourage students to take charge of their learning journey with our Self-Directed Learner Resources. Students can access a variety of Student Success Programs webinars, handouts, and guides highlighting essential learning strategies for medical school, available any time for students. Students are invited to discuss these resources further for more personalization during the one-on-one sessions with their Learning Specialist.
