Make a Difference
The College of Sciences and Mathematics strives to provide students with experiences beyond the classroom that equip our graduates to compete nationally for jobs and graduate study. We are constantly seeking to support opportunities for our students to engage in science either through original research or internships. A vast majority of our programs require students to engage in original research and we support research year-round, including innovative summer programs that support both rising seniors as well as early career students.
Our Summer Scholars program, aimed at rising seniors, provides 8-to-10-week research experiences for academic credit while our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program provides funding for underclassmen to begin their research career by providing a stipend and a dorm room for a 6-week experience. These experiences foster strong relationships between students and faculty, and extend well beyond the laboratory. We host a summer seminar series for research students, several research symposia each academic year, and fund students to travel to regional and national conferences to present their research.
Of course, this type of experiential learning comes at a cost. Over the past four years, we have added over $200,000 in research instrumentation, provided over $300,000 in summer fellowships and housing, and sent hundreds of undergraduates to conferences around the country. By supporting the CSM Dean's Discretionary fund, you will be directly supporting students in the College by providing:
- Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships
- Advanced research instrumentation and supplies to support undergraduate research
- Travel funds for students to present their research at conferences
