Hannibal Lokumbe’s Children of Fire for voices, chamber orchestra, and jazz quartet with Lokumbe’s Of Peace for choir and other works by living composers
featuring
Hannibal Lokumbe and Kim Phuc Phan Thi
Wednesday, April 16
McAfee Concert Hall
7:30pm
Pre-Concert Discussion with Hannibal Lokumbe and
Kim Phuc Phan Thi starts at 6:45pm

Artist Statement:

The composition, Children of The Fire is a protest against war, be it in the name of God, king or country. The piece was composed immediately after viewing a televised news segment of a young Vietnamese girl running naked on a road outside her village. She was in obvious agony from the napalm attack which burned her skin. Children of The Fire was my immediate music and human response to that horrid sight.

It would be the greatest honor to have that same child, now a grown woman, hear the composition she so greatly inspired.

From the journal of Hannibal Lokumbe, 2019
