CSM Expands Summer Science Camp Programming

February 5, 2025 | by Grace Lappenga

Programming now includes 14 science camps, including a camp experience for middle schoolers

The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) is expanding its summer science camp programming after three years of increased participation and enrollment. What started as six camp programs in summer 2023 will broaden to 14 programs this upcoming summer.

The intent of the camps is to provide students with a way to pursue an interest in science in a fun, refreshing learning environment over the summer.

“Students get these deep, hands-on, project-based experiences that they're not able to explore as much at the high school level,” noted CSM assistant dean Dr. Beth Bowman. “There is so much enthusiasm for it students and faculty both have a great time.”

Additionally, 2025 will be the first summer where middle school programming is offered. Each day will be centered around a different area of science, giving students a broad outlook on what the field has to offer.

“What we're hoping to do is help [middle school students] keep their curiosity. We want them to know that science and math are not just about memorizing,” said Bowman. “It's about wanting to understand the world. It's about asking questions.”

There will also be expanded camp opportunities for high schoolers, with themes ranging from sports analytics to medical microbiology.

While summer camps at some universities are led by graduate students, Belmont’s are developed and taught by CSM faculty, advantageously providing students with high quality educational experiences before they enter college. Students also form friendships and bonds with other like-minded students with common goals and interests.

“Some parents say that their sons or daughters just blossom by finding their crew,” said Bowman. “Some groups form such a bond that they’re still in touch after camp.”

One student wrote that their favorite part of camp was “meeting the amazing people that work here, learning to code and do statistics. I loved it all because it made me stop doubting myself and my ability to enter this field.”

Another student shared, “attending this summer camp was such a blessing. It gave me more knowledge and understanding of microbiology. My favorite part was doing labs, taking pictures and making a poster about them. It was a lot of fun to have had the chance to feel like I was actually doing something that has changed the way I view my understanding of microbiology.”
