Fitness & Recreation

FitRec offers a number facilities where members of the Belmont community can workout, take group fitness classes, play basketball, and so much more. Not only are these facilities excellent for working out and exercising, but it is also one of the best places on campus to meet other students and create new friendships. Once you are finished working out, take advantage of the tables located throughout the Beaman Center to get homework done, meet with friends or just relax before going to class!

A wide view of the Weight RoomThe Weight Room offers over 4,154 sq. ft. of free weights, weight machines, and cardiovascular machines; everything you need to help improve flexibility, develop strength, tone muscles, increase cardiorespiratory fitness, reduce percentage of body fat, and improve overall health and wellness. The strength equipment was updated in Summer 2023, so come check out what FitRec has to offer!  

Weight Room Policies

 

  1. Proper athletic clothing and non-marking athletic shoes must be worn when using the weight room. Closed toed shoes are required in the weight room.  Shoes such as Crocs, Birkenstocks, house shoes/slippers, boots, etc. are examples of shoes that are prohibited in the weight room. 
  2. To keep patrons out of harm’s way, adherence to all safety measures provided for each machine is required. This includes safety clips on treadmills, weight collars on all barbells, and spotters when lifting weight over the head or chest.
  3. No food or glass bottles are allowed in the weight room. Patrons can carry liquid in the weight room in a closed top bottle.
  4. Olympic lifting is always prohibited in the weight room. Deadlifting is permitted and must be performed on a deadlift platform. Olympic lifting is defined as any movement during which a barbell travels from below the waist to the upper torso area in an explosive manner. Examples include cleans, hang cleans, snatches, jerks, etc. For the safety of patrons in the weight room, any overhead pressing with a barbell must be done within a squat rack.
  5. Bumper plates are required when using the deadlift platform and can only be used on the platform.
  6. Chalk, in any form, is not allowed to be used in the weight room or Caldwell Hall Fitness Center.
  7. Patrons should be courteous to others using the Weight Room and refrain from excessively loud or profane language.
  8. Slamming and or dropping weights from extreme heights is prohibited. Patrons should use weights that they can control throughout the entire exercise.
  9. To keep a clean and germ-free area, patrons are required to wipe down the machines and equipment after each use.
  10. All equipment should remain in the weight room unless permission has been given by the facility assistant or supervisor on duty.
  11. Due to liability reasons, no outside personal training is allowed in the fitness center. This includes in-person or virtual training, and any patron interested in personal training should obtain information from the Facility Assistant or Beaman Information Desk.
  12. Patrons are to use the lockers in the weight room area to store personal belongings during their workout. At no time should patrons leave their belongings lying on the floor.  If all the lockers in, and around the weight room are full, day-use locks may be checked out at the Beaman Information Desk.
  13. Adjusting the audio or television equipment is prohibited. Please ask the Facility Assistant for help if you want to see something specific. Certain channels are not viewed on the televisions due to inappropriate content that may appear.
  14. A 30-minute time limit on cardiovascular machines must be observed when others are
  15. During peak hours, patrons may not occupy more than 1 piece of equipment at a time during a workout. Also, patrons are discouraged from staying on one piece of equipment for prolonged periods.
  16. Due to special events in the Maddox Grand Atrium, use of free weights and strength training equipment may be suspended periodically. FitRec will communicate these times to the Belmont community to keep patrons informed.

A wide view of the Rec GymThis regulation-size gymnasium in the Fitness Center is available for open recreation at all times, except when it conflicts with Intramural events or pre-approved special events. Basketballs are available in the gym for use or can check them out from the front desk. The court is lined for Basketball, Volleyball, and Pickleball. 

The Rec Gym is used at various time throughout the day by different groups.  In order to know if the gym is available for pick up ball, students can check the Rec Gym schedule through Virtual EMS via the directions below, or by checking the "Rec Gym Schedule" on the FitRec On The Go App.

Rec Gym Policies

  2. Due to safety concerns, individuals may not participate in any activity barefoot. Please refer to general Fitness Center policies for a list of appropriate athletic clothing.
  3. Due to potential danger to other patrons and damage to the physical building, some unorganized activities are prohibited. Examples include but are not limited to soccer, futsal, baseball, roller hockey, and football unless permission has been granted from a supervisor. Any equipment associated with these activities is prohibited.
  4. During busy times of the day and when a student requests it, the curtain may be dropped dividing the court into two playable courts allowing more patrons to utilize the space.
  5. Due to safety concerns any individual who dunks, attempts to dunk, hangs on, or breaks down the rims of the basketball goals may be subject to appropriate sanctions from FitRec or the Office of Community Accountability.
  6. No food, glass bottles, or canned drinks are allowed in the Rec Gym. Patrons can carry liquid in the Rec Gym in a closed top bottle.
  7. Patrons are allowed to play music through their own personal Bluetooth speaker, but music must be clean and not offensive.

Students working out in a group spin classThe 2,226 square-foot group fitness room offers not only mirrored walls and suspended flooring, but also a beautiful view of the eastern portion of Belmont's campus.  This room is home to FitRec’s group exercise classes and classes for Belmont's Dance Minor.  When classes are not occurring in the room, students may use the space and most of the equipment for their workouts. Spin bikes are not available for general use.

Group Fitness Room and Class Policies

  1. All equipment must remain in the group fitness room unless permission has been granted from the facility assistant or a supervisor on duty.
  2. Patrons are encouraged to use the cubbies in the Group Fitness Room to store personal belongings during class. FitRec strongly suggests that patrons secure their belongings in the locker room using daily locks. Daily locks may be checked out at the Beaman Information Desk.
  3. Non-marking athletic shoes are required in the group fitness room, except for those participating in specialized activities for which shoes are not necessary.
  4. Any person wishing to use the group fitness room, outside FitRec and Belmont sponsored classes, must provide their own source of clean, appropriate music.
  5. No food, glass bottles, or canned drinks are allowed in the Group Fitness Room. Patrons can carry liquid in the Group Fitness Room in a closed top bottle.
  6. During open recreation times, the group fitness room is available for use by all patrons on a drop-in basis. Patrons are expected to follow all guidelines and are not allowed to monopolize the room with any activity.

 Group Fitness Guidelines 

  1. Patrons are required to check-in with the group fitness instructor before attending a class. To reserve and be guaranteed a spot in class, patrons are encouraged to pre-register through FitRec Connect or the FitRec On The Go app and can be made up to 72 hours (about 3 days) in advance.
  2. If a patron that has pre-registered for the class has not shown up at the class start time, and has not alerted the FitRec staff that they will be late, their spot will be forfeited and given to the next person on the waiting list.
  3. To get a sufficient warm up before class, participants are highly encouraged to arrive to class on time. Late participants may be denied entry to the class at the instructor’s discretion.
  4. Classes are a group activity. Please follow the instructor’s directions and be considerate of other participants.
  5. A doctor’s clearance is recommended prior to beginning any exercise program.
  6. Water is highly recommended, and participants are encouraged to regularly monitor their own workout intensity and take water breaks as needed.

 Registering for Group Fitness Classes Via FitRec Connect

  1. Follow the link to connect you to the online portal, FitRec Connect: https://fitrecconnect.belmont.edu/
  2. Select “Sign In”. Select “MyBelmont Login” to the right if you are a student, faculty or staff member. For all other users and follow prompts. Choose “Use My Local Account” if you do not have a BUID.
  3. If you selected “Use My Local Account” this will prompt you to use “Already Have an Account?” Your username will be “first.last”. For example, susie.jean and your password will be 1900Belmont and after you login, it will prompt you to create a password of your own!
  4. Once you are logged in, click the group fitness icon in the middle of the page.

Student climbing the Rock WallThis massive, Real Rock surface stretches 30 feet tall and 28 feet wide, provides nearly 1,000 sq. feet of climbing surface accommodating up to 900 holds and natural climbing features. Climbers can top-rope, boulder and lead-climb. The Fitness Center has harnesses, shoes, chalk bags, carabiners, and ATC devices available for checkout by students.

The Fitness Center is equipped with two Racquetball Courts and equipment (racquets, goggles, and ball) can be checked out by members.  The space can also be converted to Wallyball courts, or Pickleball courts on request from patrons.

Racquetball Courts Policies

  1. Proper athletic clothing and non-marking athletic shoes are to be worn in the courts.
  2. All racquets must have racquet guards.
  3. Racquetball court use will be limited to one hour if there are patrons waiting to play or use the court. Patrons may use the court for longer than one hour if nobody is waiting to play or use the court.
  4. Racquetball courts may be reserved for one hour during peak times or if other patrons are waiting.
  5. Participants should refrain from the deliberate abuse of walls, floors, equipment, and/or doors.
  6. To ensure the safety of participants, eye protection is encouraged when playing racquetball and can be checked out at the desk.
  7. The only activities allowed in the racquetball courts will be racquetball, wallyball, and dodgeball. All other activities are prohibited unless permission has been granted from a supervisor.
  8. Racquetball equipment that is checked out from the fitness center must be returned in proper working conditions. Any patron that returns damaged equipment will be responsible for replacing it. 

Reservation Procedures 

  1. Racquetball courts can be reserved no more than 24 hours in advance by calling 615.460.6313 or by stopping by the BID in the fitness center.
  2. One court will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and use is limited to one hour if patrons are waiting to use it.
  3. All players must check-in at the BID before using a court.
  4. A waiting list will be established, and courts not claimed will be given away 10 minutes after the reservation time.
  5. At least two players are required to reserve a court.

Locker RoomThe fitness center offers fully functioning locker rooms for use by the members while they are utilizing the facilities. Both the men’s and women’s locker rooms offer showers, stocked with soap and shampoo, lockers available to rent or use by the day, and hair dryers for your convenience. Towels are not provided, so any members planning to use showers must bring their own. Members that have questions about renting a locker or want to check out a day-use lock may do so with one of our facility assistants at the Beaman Information Desk.

 Students working out in the Caldwell Hall Weight RoomWho can access the Caldwell Hall Weight Room? 

  • ALL students will have access to the weight room and will be required to scan their Belmont ID the same way they do in the Beaman.  
  • Faculty and staff will not have access and should continue to use the Beaman Center for their on campus fitness needs.  
  • Guests of students will not be allowed to use the fitness studio and should utilize the space in the Beaman.  

How do I get to the weight room? 

All students can access the weight room by entering Caldwell Hall via the front or back doors and take the stairs or elevator down to the lower level and the weight room is connected to the lobby area.

Students playing tennis on a tennis courtBelmont Tennis Complex is the official home of Belmont University men's and women's tennis. Opened in March 2021 and part of the Crockett Center for Athletic Excellence, the Belmont Tennis Complex features six state-of-the-art hardcourt surfaces, the same surface used at ATP and WTA events. Belmont Tennis Complex sits atop the 830-space South Parking Garage.

Important Updates and Rules:

  • Students/Faculty/Staff will not have direct access to the tennis courts.  Players will need to follow the directions below to access the courts.
  • Effective Immediately:  Pickleball is prohibited in the Crockett Center Tennis Complex.  The enforcement of this policy is critical to maintaining the safety and standards necessary for a collegiate tennis facility.  Any reported violations, whether by a FitRec, department of athletics team member, or another patron, will be addressed promptly and professionally.
  • Courts are under 24/7 camera/video surveillance.
  • Tennis court usage is limited to Belmont faculty/staff/students and alumni with a FitRec membership.
  • Proper footwear is required.  Tennis or white soled shoes are allowed.  Non-athletic or black soled shoes are prohibited. 
  • Do not lower/tamper with the nets, chairs, or accessories in any way. 
  • Tape and chalk is strictly prohibited and should not be used on the courts. 
  • Belmont is not responsible for any injuries, accidents, or health risks of players while using the courts.  If an injury occurs, please contact Belmont Security immediately at 615-460-6911.
  • No food or glass containers allowed in the tennis court complex.
  • Scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, bikes, etc. are prohibited.  

Failure to comply with these policies or to cooperate with staff may result in further investigation and action by the appropriate campus department.

Facility Access

  1. Create an account on our Court Reservation System by clicking the link below.  Keep in mind, you can only create an account if you are a faculty, staff, student, or alumni with a FitRec membership.  You will need a BUID and Belmont email to verify your account.  Please click here to learn how to apply for membership!
  2. Make a reservation on the Court Reservation System during an open time for you play tennis and guarantee court availability. 
  3. Check in at the FitRec desk in the Beaman Center to receive your access card that will get you into the Tennis Center.
  4. Return card to FitRec once you are finished playing.
  5. In the event of courts being full, members that make a reservation will be given priority so it is encouraged that you create an account and reserve a court each time you play.

Tennis Equipment

Current students, faculty, staff and alumni members of FitRec can check out tennis equipment by visiting the Beaman Information Desk in the Beaman Center and following the equipment checkout procedures. All tennis equipment must be returned before FitRec closes for the day. Hours of operation can be found here.
